MARY’S Vol. XIX, No. 14 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA May 10, 1957 St. Mary’s Has Successful May Day “The Little Girl AVho Couldn’t Gance” was presented before Queen Coleman Jenkins, who jiresided over her May Court, on Saturday and Monday afternoons. May 4 and 6. The regularly scheduled Saturday performance, held in the gym be- eause of rain, was well-attended hy relatives and friends of the Participants. The pageant was re peated outdoors Monday afternoon for the benefit of the students and those unable to attend the Satur day program. The May Court was comj)osed of twelve lovely Belles, attired in yel- ;ow chiffon, i)icture hats, and carry- bouquets of white daisys. The Oiembers were Dickie Robinson, Midge Bowen, Sylvia and Mickie Crumpler, Florelle Gwaltney, Julia 'mllcox, Mary Ann and Allene Reith, Helen Corbett, IMarjorie Coddington, Octavia Rliillips, and Betty Howard, .fosie Ward, the 'Oaid of honor, wore blue chiffon, a I’lcture hat, and carried white daisys "ffli blue ribbons. The 1957 IMaj" Queen, Coleman ; enkins, looked every inch a queen M her beautiful dress of white satin ^iinmed in seed i)earls and sequins. They were Betsy Bi’inkley, ottie Buck, Caroline Clark, Caro- y’ Cobb, DeeDee DeVere, Patri- a Huske, Byrd Love, Allison -Gore, yiargaret Reese, Mary J'ainhour, Jane Walker, and JVatesy Webb. , ollowing the may i)ole dance, story of “The Little Girl Who j nldn’t Dance” was presented, girf^*'^ Hobbs portrayed the little "’I'o has a terrible time in her class which is instructed by Jo Burgwyn. Being dismissed from the class, she falls asleep and has bad dreams haunted by the Tor mentors. Soon, however, she is awakened by the spirit Grace, Beth Morrison, who bestows this spirit uj)on her. She accordingly receives the gifts of the spirits of: Rhythm, Joy Howell; Beauty, Nancy Page Hopkins; and Choreography, Chee Davis. Now able to dance, the little girl rejoins her ballet class, and the j>ageant closes after the four spirits return to view her ])ro- gress. The May Day was directed by Mrs. Blount. Special Orchesis mem bers who were responsible for the choreograi)hy were: Legare Hobbs, chairman; Alay Court dance by Allene Keith and Octavia Phillii)s; Ballet Class by Jo Burgwyn assist ed by Barrett Proctor; Tormentors by Florelle Gwaltney assisted by Joy Little; Grace by Beth Morrison assisted by Julia Fuller; Rhythm by Joy Howell assisted by Anne Speir; Beauty by Nancy Page Hop kins assisted by Elizabeth Blake; and Choreography by dice Davis assisted by Jennie Proctor. Cos tumes were under the supervision of Kim Hatcher. The members of the Beacon served as ushers. Bar bara Thomas designed the program cover, and she and Catherine Dent were in charge of programs and publicity. Jane bite was chair man of jiropertics and the set de signer; Libby Gregory was sound engineer; and Dot Harley, Jane Irby and Frances Pearson were stage managers. Dr. Browne, as sisted by IMichael Gardner and Bard Gatling, was resiionsible for the sound recordings. IMr. Lewis Haltey and Mr. Clifford Goolsby were die stage engineers. Aluch time and work went into the ]iroduction, and The Belles would like to offer its congratula tions to all concerned for a wonder ful Mav Day Pageant. SMJC Students See Dedication Of Dorm Students, faculty members, visit ors, and distinguished guests wit nessed the formal opening of Penick Hall on Saturday, IMay 4, 1957. The new senior dormitory, located on north campus, bears the name of the Rt. Rev Edwin Anderson Pen ick, President of the Board of Trustees of St, Alary’s and Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. St. Mary’s president. Dr. Richard G. Stone, presided over the dedica tion and opening ceremony. The school chaplin, the Rev. Mr. I. Harding Hughes, jiresented the in vocation, after which Mayor Fred B. Wheeler extended greetings from the city of Raleigh. St. Mary’s Glee Club rendered two selections, “Prayer for St. Alary’s” and the School Hymn. Dr. William C. Pressly, who re presented the Noi'tli Carolina Coun cil of Church-Related Colleges, was then recognized. Following the path of tradition, deposits were made in the corner stone box of the new building. The dei)osits were: minutes of the Board of Trustees; a St Alary’s catalogue placed by Dr. Alable AI. Alorrison of the faculty; a copy of the “Bul letin” by Airs. James AI. Webb, President of the Alumnae Associa tion; a co])y of the dedication j)ro- gram by Airs. Fitz E. Davis, Presi dent of the Raleigh Alumnae Chap ter; newspaper clippings of the opening of the new dormitory by Barry Bowen, President of the Stu dent Government Association; a co))y of The Belles by Kim Hatcher, President of the Day Students; a co})y of the North Carolina Church man by Betsy Brinkley, President of the Senior Class; minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting which authorized the building by Caroline Cobb, President of the Junior Class; a copy of the tribute to Bishop Pcnick by Suzanne Burton, Presi dent of the Sophomore Class; a copy of the Student Handbook by Katesy Webb, President of the Freshman Class; and a coin by Landrum Alanning, President of the Commercial Class. Air. J. B. A. Eringhaus, a mem- her of the Board of Trustees and chairman of the building commit tee, made the j)resentation of the trowel. The Rt. Reverend Richard H. Baker, member of the Board of of Trustees and Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of North Carolina, later used the trowel in laying the cornerstone. The Rev. Air. James AIcDowell Dick, also a member of the Board of Trustees and building commit tee, paid a tribute to Bishop Pen- mk. Jean Rogerson Penick and Charles Ingelsby Penick, Jr. grand children of Bishoi) and Airs. Pen ick, then unveiled the jilague honor ing their grandfather. Bishop Penick, President of the Board of Trustees and Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, made a brief response for having been so honored in the naming of Penick Hall. The Rt. Reverend I homas H. Wright, Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina closed the ceremony with the benediction. JUNIOR-SENIOR PICNIC IS HELD Junior and Senior Picnic was held Friday, May 10, on back campus. Everyone enjoyed the chicken dinner and small get- together.
